Pomona, it is written, was a Roman Goddess of Orchards who was described as holding powerful strength Goddess who helped orchards to bare fruit. Pomona, in Manchester, is a place known to be the secret island with a history that is not obvious when you land there on a tram. When I was commissioned to write this piece for the project by the Bridgwater Hall, I went to Pomona to see what song may arrive there. I realised that people seemed to go to Pomona to catch another tram somewhere else which made sense to me about relationships too, and how sometimes, we go through relationships that we really think will last forever but the relationship is really there to show us where the cracks in ourselves are, so that we can heal and return to whole. Thank you for listening...

POMONA

by Kirsty Almeida

Tram Tracks Project - Bridgewater Hall
The Buddleja frames the ground
The birds sing their daily rounds
And the arches remind me of Berlin
The cycle paths remind that - coming back is going there again

The cracks in the tarmac
Seep history as far back
As the old winds that continue to blow
And the skies show me how far I come
and how far I’ve got to go

...And just like Pomona
We built something strong out of love
But the cracks keep on growing
And nature keeps showing - that we had to come here just to know
We had to come here just to know
We had to come here just to know
Where we’ve got to go

Greys and the purples
The canal and its ripples Just whisper, ‘Love needs to flow’,
And I know now, that all I know, Is all that I needed to grow

So... just like Pomona
We built something strong out of love But the cracks keep on growing
And nature keeps showing
That we had to come here just to know We had to come here just to know We had to come here just to know Where we’ve got to go
